pawaTech Takes Part in Africa's First Safer Gambling Week
pawaTech Group, licensor of the betPawa brand, took part in the inaugural Africa Safer Gambling Week, held from 7 to 11 September 2026 across Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Malawi. The Week aimed to raise awareness of safer gambling and make sure people who need support know where to find it.
Led by the African iGaming Alliance (AiA), of which pawaTech is a founding member, the Week brought together regulators, industry associations, operators and NGOs.
Regulators and industry bodies backing the Week included the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority, South Africa's National Gambling Board, Uganda's National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board, the Gaming Board of Tanzania, the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority and the Association of Gaming Operators Kenya.
How the Week Took Safer Gambling Beyond the Industry
The inaugural Week covered five themes in five days: responsible gambling, personal limits, safer gambling tools, preventing underage gambling, and the risks of unlicensed operators.
Awareness activities ran in local marketplaces and other community spaces across the six countries, and pawaTech was part of that effort. The messages focused on practical advice, from treating gambling as entertainment rather than a way to make income to knowing where to get help.
Olabimpe Akingba, Head of Responsible Gaming at pawaTech and an AiA board member, said:
“Africa Safer Gambling Week demonstrates what is possible when African stakeholders come together around a shared commitment to player protection. At pawaTech, we believe responsible gaming must be practical, accessible and relevant to the communities we serve. We are proud to have supported an initiative that took safer gambling conversations directly into communities while bringing regulators, industry and other stakeholders together across multiple African jurisdictions.”
What Comes Next?
The inaugural Week is a first step towards closer cooperation on safer gambling across Africa, and the AiA aims to make it an annual event. pawaTech will keep working with regulators, industry partners and other stakeholders towards an African gaming sector where innovation and growth go hand in hand with responsible gaming and effective player protection.
